Here’s how we could fix social care and support

We need a National Care, Support and Independent Living Service
Social care and support is in crisis – that is agreed across the political spectrum. The Casey Commission is Labour’s response. Its timescale may be too long, but we still need to ensure that it takes a holistic and radical approach. This is the transformation in social care we need, based on the programme drawn up by the End Social Care Disgrace campaign.

Social Insecurity Report from Amnesty International

Successive governments have failed to protect basic rights. Instead of dealing with what’s driving poverty and soaring living costs, this government is choosing to make cuts. It’s doing that by framing people who are disabled, ill, and unemployed as a ‘burden’. That narrative isn’t new, but it’s still working. Blame is being shifted onto the people most in need, while those in power avoid responsibility.
Amnesty UK has been investigating how cuts, sanctions and systemic failings of the social security system are pushing people deeper into poverty. Our new report, Social Insecurity, shows the UK is breaching its human rights obligations, and it’s time for change.

MEETING IN PARLIAMENT
On 18 November 2024, End Social Care Disgrace held a meeting in Westminster Hall, chaired by Rt Hon John McDonnell MP MPs. Peers and members of social care organisations attended.
“It offered a great opportunity to link up across parties and with grassroots campaigners to discuss how we can stop the social care can being kicked down the road yet again. We hope that we can campaign together for the urgent establishment of a National Care, Support and Independent Living Service, while also trying to ensure that current injustices with regard to disabled and older people, carers and care/support workers are addressed.”
